I have copies my /template/product/search.tpl into isearch1551.tpl

any suggestions?

It appears the theme I am using has a custom (non-standard) search so the .js search wrapper does not catch the isearch until the second page results, with strange behaviour.

I have modified their .js to call product/isearch instead of product/search for the time being...

I visited your website and could not find iSearch module applied on your search box. Probably you have disabled it for now or the module could not apply properly on the search box of your theme as you have mentioned in your post. However I cannot say what exactly causes the problem.
