How to Add a New Language in OpenCart 3.x

Video transcript:

Hi there. This is iSenseLabs bringing you another OpenCart 3 tutorial.

This time, you will learn how to make your OpenCart 3 store available in multiple languages.

Let’s show how to install a new language and how to enable it from your admin panel.

First, go to System, then Localisation.

Click Languages.

The only entry will be the default English language.

To add a new language, we first need to install it.

Installing languages is as easy as installing any other OpenCart extension.

Go to the Marketplace and download the language you need for the OpenCart version you’re running.

In our case, we downloaded Portuguese, which is a free module by OpenCart Brasil.

So, like we said, same with every other module. Go to Extensions and click on the Installer.

Hit upload and choose the language you’ve downloaded.

When this is done, head back to the languages in your Localisation settings.

Now, click the Add New button in the top right corner to begin setting up your new language.

First, enter the language name. In our case - Portuguese.

Next, select the code. After installing our language, we now have the PT-BR language code in the dropdown.

Below the code you have the locale. In OpenCart, these are the parameters that define the user language. According to the documentation, the Portuguese locale looks like that.

Now all you have to do is enable the language and give it a sort order number.

And you’re all done.

Time to click Save.

Your new language is installed and ready for use!

Let’s show what’s new in your admin panel and storefront.

Let’s say you want to create a new category using the freshly installed language. Go to catalog, categories and add a new category.

You’ll notice the Portuguese language as a new tab next to the default English.

Now head to the storefront.

In the top left corner, next to the currency dropdown, you have the one to switch your languages. Click the new language and your site content will be changed automatically.

So, that’s all!

Find your language in the marketplace, install it and enable it from the Localisation settings - simple!
